Introducing the New Chancellor of the Diocese of Bunbury

Dear Brother Priests, Deacons, Religious, Staff and Parishioners of the Bunbury Diocese

Today, 3 February 2026, I am delighted to welcome Mrs Kerrie Merritt as the Chancellor of the Diocese of Bunbury.

The office of Chancellor is an important canonical role within the life of the Diocese. In accordance with the law of the Church, the Chancellor is entrusted with ensuring that diocesan acts and decrees are properly prepared, issued, and securely archived, and that official Church documents are accurately recorded and certified. In this way, the Chancellor serves the good order, transparency, and pastoral governance of the Diocese.

Kerrie’s primary responsibility as Chancellor will be the fulfilment of these canonical duties. In addition, and as delegated, she will support the Office of the Bishop, by providing pastoral and strategic oversight of staff and their functions in collaboration with the Episcopal Council. Kerrie will also oversee particular projects that serve the mission of evangelisation.

In her work, Kerrie will collaborate closely with the Vicar General, the Episcopal Vicar for Clergy, and the staff of the Chancery and diocesan agencies. Her role is intended to support and strengthen our shared ministry, fostering communication, collaboration, and synodal practice across the Diocese.

A principal focus of Kerrie’s work in the coming months will be the preparation and coordination of the Diocesan Synodal Assembly to be held in August, when representatives from our parishes, schools, and diocesan agencies will gather for prayerful listening and discernment. This Assembly will be an important step as we work together to prepare a pastoral plan for the future of our Diocese.

Kerrie takes up this role on a part-time basis. I am grateful to Kerrie for her willingness to serve the Diocese of Bunbury at this important time in our synodal journey. I ask you to join me in warmly welcoming Kerrie and in supporting her with your prayers.
